When I was a kid, I had a flourescent orange raincoat. Everyone stopped and stared when I wore it but I was visible, wasn’t I? And look around now - the cops wear the same thing especially on dark monsoon evenings for the same purpose!

One of my favorite outfits was a full-sleeved red striped polo-neck with jeans. It caused a stir among my classmates when I first wore it. Why? Because it had no shoulders - only a high neck and sleeves with cut-outs where my shoulder joints were.

I’ve also owned a bright orange gown, a water-pouch with ice packs, a colour-spattered tie-up shirt, a zillion scarves, a dragonfly brooch, knee-high leather boots, a black neck-strap and sundry other things. Sometimes they’ve got me murmurs of dissent, sometimes appreciative sighs. They’ve always received attention.

When I was eight, the kids called me weird.
As a teenager, I had an attitude (problem).
And now, it is simply my signature style.

As a staunch individualist, I doff my hat (beret, hood, cap) to those who carry a mark of their own personal style on their apparel and their possessions. This section honours the spirit of individual style. I may like some of what I see or I may not. But anything that catches my eye, solely for how different it is, scores high on I Style!

On I Style! I feature people I meet who carry/ wear something offbeat, zany, whacky or plain unusual. They are friends, colleagues, commuters on the train and total strangers. The photographs are usually shot on my cellphone so don’t judge their aesthetics too harshly.

I must add that this section is also open to contributions. If you spot someone wearing something whacky, something crazy, something unusual, stop and talk to them. And if they permit you to take a picture, do send it to me. I’ll be delighted to feature it on I Style! Just make sure you’ve got their permission to have it up on the internet. It would be good to take down their email address. If possible, capture the article that caught your eye with just enough detail to give perspective (size, colour, nature etc). Avoiding the face respects the spottee’s anonymity. So get out there and start I Style! spotting right away! I’ll post any good entries I receive with credit due to you or your blog if you have one.
