Kinship

I walked down those roads today
Where you walked so long ago
Some of your footsteps lay etched before me
And I stepped into your shoes
Walking the paths you had, just to see what it felt like to be you

Here and there,
I saw a occasional memento
Personal souvenirs of you, lying strewn amidst the debris
A stray thought somewhere
A lingering wisp of something…it might even have been my imagination..or not?

I mingled in your memories
And laughed at jokes you’d once shared with other people
And I sat down inside your mind, tiny elf-like
And watched the world for awhile,
the way it had looked through your eyes

I saw a drop of blood once
And something curiously like dried tears
Yours
Or of someone you loved
Who was part of you

Today, I took a walk down your memory lane
And I did it to see what you were like from within
To look beneath your skin without you knowing I was there
But I couldn’t help being me, there even
Lost within your life
All I could think of was

When you were sighing, so far away
I was, too
Stranger in another continent
But kin to your emotion
You were not alone
And I wasn’t either

You were not alone, and I wasn’t either,
But it couldn’t have been lonelier!
Stepped in my shoes, seeing through my eyes,
Yet still a stranger, across the oceans.
    Being my kin is happiness,
But not being mine is despair.

    Am I wanting too much,
Or is another walk just fine,
    No tears, no blood.
Just a few steps, in each others shoes.
Laughs, whispers, smiles, a few needful,
Just us, as us, for sometime, for each other.

Just us, as us, for sometime, for each other
    It’s a past gone by
    Time that flies
    Was great when it was
    As it was

The cycle of life leads you on
To places galore and unknown of
Take each day in its stride
    Something will come by
    And you will smile

Smile I will, for life is short,
But to see back is not ill,
At times to want it, is not wrong.
Us does not make me sad,
    Warmth mostly, lonely at times.

True to emotions, is not feeling low.
It is being me, honest to self.
I was so then, as am I now.
    Varied views at different times,
So what! I live to just live, and to smile.
